Day 1 - Our hood

Getting out of Portland and Vancouver turned out to be the hard part. China Air was efficient and polite, even gracious. Immigration was fine, and we were met by Min, holding a sign for us, and then driving us ( yes, right side drive - Japanese, not British - tho the traffic is also right side)...

for about an hour through Yangon, on some very pleasant tropical avenues flanked by lush trees - no buses allowed - to our hotel, which is a no-star on the outside...

but our room is surprisingly nice, and we have free (tho a bit slow) wi-fi.

We do like our neighborhood, where we had lunch at a tea shop (tea and noodles - all the rage)....

and walked around a bit.

There were a lot of food vendors....

several schools, one of which had some inventive marketing...

a guy hanging his squid out to dry...

and stalwart efforts to give the city life.

We later met with our main tour guy, Mr. Soe Min Aye (now Soe to us), who took us on a fast-paced walking tour.

Just a warm-up. Tomorrow we'll start touring in earnest.
