Day 32 - Meinmahlakyune Second Day

We started our second day in the sanctuary with an early ride through the mangroves.

We saw many species of birds, but little that was photographable, and no crocs. We did see several flocks of whistling ducks...

and a lot of kingfishers - our favorite being the white-throated, whose beautiful blue back would really flash in the early sunlight.

At one point we got out of the boat...

and walked along the beach mudflat (felt good on the feet)...

where there were thousands of red crabs that the gulls, whimbrels, and curlews were feeding on...

and several small green bee eaters, a species that was a first for us.

And every once in awhile some interesting folks would happen by.

We visited a fishing village, Kadone Kani...

where we popped into a monastery-funded primary school (teaches all subjects per govt. directive), here benefitting from a Dana-ordered Hokie Pokie. Note the help she's getting from Mr. Soe and the director.

We thought Kadone Kane was the closest to the Bay of Bengal (heavy navy presence), but then we went even farther south, to Shwe Sar Yan - where the smell of drying fish and shrimp left no doubt as to the village's livelihood.

Even the socializing apparently centers around fishing, with this group of women sorting shrimp and gossiping, no doubt including us in the conversation, judging by the looks and giggles.

We had a really fine fish dinner that night (a local species of trout)...

followed by another croc shining ride, this time yielding a bit of a view of a three footer (image is poor quality since it is a photo capture from a video shot in very low light).

  1. Videos embedded. Hard to see the croc, but pretty cool nonetheless.
